Hand-woven Thai SIlk

Things You Didn't Know about Thai Silk Production

Hand-woven Thai silk is a timeless piece of unique craftsmanship and art created by rural Thai women. Every strand of hand-woven silk reflects the beauty of natural fibers. The imperfections in the threads make the silk more desirable as a living and breathing fabric. In fact, the uneven texture of Thai silk renders hand-weaving the only way to achieve the luster and finish associated with it.

Thai silk has many unparalleled qualities. Its fibers are triangular in nature. As a result, each thread of hand-woven acts like a miniature prism, reflecting light and making the silk highly lustrous. Since Thai silk is a naturally woven fiber, it has considerable strength and elasticity. The silk is known to be light and supple, yet strong and flexible. In addition to this, the many layers of protein that make up silk threads give a natural sheen to the fibers giving them a smooth as well as shiny appearance. The satin-like finish of Thai silk, dupioni makes it ideal for all-purpose use in clothing as well as interior decoration.

Thai silk is the natural filament produced by a variety of caterpillars that feed on mulberry bushes and spin cocoons. The composition of the cocoon itself is silk. Thai silk naturally comes in a variety of different colors from light gold to light green. But with careful dying a range of vibrant colours are available. The earliest fibers of Thai silk date well over 3000 years and were found in the ruins of the Baan Chiang in the North Eastern side of Thailand. The city is considered as one of the oldest Southeast Asian civilizations.

The History and Making of Thai Silk

Every silk cocoon is made up of one single thread of silk up to 1500 meters in length. A single filament of the thread is too delicate and cannot be used alone. As a result, the Thai silk weavers combine many threads and form a thicker fiber. This is done by painstakingly hand reeling threads with a wooden spindle to produce uniform strands of silk.

The Thai silk that we use is locally made and this technique for manufacturing strands is the one our craftsmen adopt. This process adds to the elegance and beauty of traditional Thai dupioni silk. The hand-woven has unique luxury properties and includes a blend of two different colors for the warp and the weft. This is proof of its originality.
